Donna Engebretson

As a student of ancient cultures, specifically my love affair with the Hellenic Greeks, I have marveled at the complexity and depth that their jewelry designs had taken. I have been inspired by the attention to detail, the mythical stories, the sheer mastery of metal that the ancients possessed and how beautiful the mark of a human hand can be upon the gold. I have taken granulation and ancient ring classes at the Revere Academy in San Francisco under the direction of the nationally known master goldsmith Jean Stark.

In my studio, with the assistance of my fellow goldsmith and husband Preston, we alloy and produce our own 22k gold wire and sheet. A very exact formula and procedure must be followed in order for the granulation to be effective as well as beautiful.

Each grain of gold or piece of wire is painstakingly placed and fused to the main body of the piece. Solder is only introduced after all granulation is complete and the necessary 18k findings are to be attached. In our studios we experiment with alloys of pure gold and fine silver, also known as electrum, to create a white gold.

Bee de Luna. This magnificent bee has a very intricate granulation pattern on the top wings. The head is blue topaz and the body is a mabe pearl. Approximate size is 2" x 2".
Topaz bee pin/pendant in 22k gold and silvery/grey south sea pearl.
Greek diadem made by Preston Engebretson. It features an intricate flower with twisted wire edges and a 5mm diamond in the center. The entire piece is made of 22k gold.
Hera- 22k gold necklace of amethyst, tsavorite, and chrome diopside. Each pair of links has a pattern that is unique. This inspiration for this piece is Hera- queen of the Greek Gods. Her favorite animal was a peacock.
Sample of ancient gold rings. The moonstone ring has swirled edges and is created after an Etruscan piece in Rome. The braided rubelite ring was fashioned after the Celtic braided jewelry. It has 22k gold and electrum wires.
