Welcome to HMAG

January 2009 Gold Pages

Greetings and Belated Happy New Year HMAG’ers!!!

The past few months of 2008 were busy with shows!!!  MFA Pearl Fincher ended exceptionally well, The Language of Color at Hanson’s far exceeded our previous shows at Hanson’s, Tevel brought a fabulous array of tools and addictions and our Holiday Party was most cheerful!!!

With all of these events as well as some who were still impacted by Ike, the board took a little R&R.  No December updates and no January events.

It’s amazing what a little bit of R&R will do – as we have you booked solid through August!!!

Happy Hammering!

Lyn.

January

As HMAG is not having a meeting in January, the following might be of interest to you.  HABA (Houston Area Blacksmith's Association) is holding their annual knife making workshop this weekend on Saturday, January 17th, at the Old Blacksmith Shop on 159 in Bellville.

This workshop is free to HABA members (membership is $20), and is open to both adults and children.  There is also an auction scheduled for late morning.  If you don't feel like participating, it is still OK to just go watch.  While you're there, you can also check out Holland Street Gallery (
www.hollandstgallery.com), which is only 2 blocks away, on the Square near the Courthouse.  They carry jewelry, blacksmithing, glass and other art forms.

For more information, photos of previous workshops and a map go to

Jewelry: Fundamentals of Metalsmithing by Tim McCreight, 1997, Hand Press Books

This is a well-written and informative book that deserves to be a classic. With clear and lively prose, McCreight covers metal-working techniques in a way that is basic enough for beginners, but never boring or repetitive. Experienced metalsmiths can use this book to brush up on skills or learn something new from the wide range of topics covered The book is also full of excellent bench tips and suggestions for further experimentation.

The topics covered include fabrication, surface treatments, joining, finishing, stone setting, chain making, mechanisms, and casting. A selection of specific techniques are explained step by step, with photos illustrating each stage of fabrication. Well-rendered drawings serve as blueprints for some of the designs and processes. I liked the section on findings and mechanisms. McCreight encourages us to think about the function and construction of such traditional components as prongs, clasps, bails, and rivets. The basic finding is never an end in itself, but a starting point to be examined, improvised to suit each particular piece, or invented as necessary.

The text is supplemented throughout with a wide variety of jewelry made by contemporary metalsmiths. The pieces vary from simple to complex, and use different materials and methods of construction. The appendices contain instructions for making an ingot and details on hardening and tempering steel for tools. There are also some useful tables which include a comparison of B&S gauge, mm, thousandths/ fractions of inches and drill sizes.

Chances are, most of us will find something of interest in this excellent book. It is useful as a reference and inspiring to browse through. Currently priced at $20 through Amazon, it is also available in the HMAG library.

Empty Bowls
Benefitting Houston Food Bank

Submission:  Beginning week of March 9, 2009

Where: Houston Center for Contemporary Craft

Event Date: March 29

For the 2008 event, more than 100 artists contributed more than 1100 bowls and several hundred Houstonians purchased bowls. Whole Foods Market donated 5% of its sales from all area stores during its Community Giving Day. As a result, Empty Bowls Houston 2008 raised more than $45,000 for the Houston Food Bank, who can turn that into an equivalent of more than $360,000 worth of food distributed to those in Houston, Harris County, and surrounding counties in need.

Any bowl or bowl-like object will be accepted, and bowls do not need to be functional (i.e. actually hold soup). For anyone wondering about size, think in terms of a bowl with a height from 2” - 4 in”, diameter from 4”- 6”, volume 1 1/2 cups to 3 cups.
